The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles wants to upgrade the basic Florida plate to a design that increases readability and a seven character configuration instead of the current six.
Kirsten Olsen-Doolan, spokeswoman for the Florida Department of HSMV, says they're running out of ways for the current six character license plates to be manufactured.
She also says that "Q's" are often mistaken for "O's," and "B's" are often mistaken for "8's." She says switching to a seven character plate will help them minimize the amount of hard-to-read letters and numbers used.
The winning design will be presented to the HSMV cabinet as "the favorite of the citizens of Florida."
