An Orange Park man was sentenced to life in prison Monday for the 2006 murder of his then-girlfriend Alicia Castanedes.
26-year-old Joshua Maulsby was convicted earlier this month for beating Castanedes to death with a baseball bat and dragging her body to a swimming pool after an argument broke out between the two over laundry.
Defense attorneys have argued that Maulsby was not in a stable state of mind at the time of the killing. Maulsby was originally ruled incompetent to stand trial after his arrest, but in 2008 a Clay county judge reversed that ruling.
