Listen to Jacksonville’s Morning News 5:00 am - 10:00 am on 104.5 FM WOKV.

This week is the fifth, and last, Furyk and Friends tournament at Timuquana Country Club. The tournament will move to Palm Coast next year.

The event has raised $4.7 million for northeast Florida charities through the Jim and Tabitha Furyk Foundation.

Jacksonville’s Morning News is live on location at Timuquana Country Club during Thursday’s Pro-Am, to spotlight what’s new this year, and how the community benefits from this annual event.

Three Big Things to Know:

  • The federal government shutdown is now in its second day and no action is anticipated today as the Congress observes Yom Kippur. House Speaker Mike Johnson went on social media to blame Democrats for the shutdown. Democratic leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer are claiming Republicans shut down the federal government “because they do not want to protect the healthcare of the American people.”
  • One of Mayor Donna Deegan’s top leaders is stepping down. The city confirmed Chief Administrative Officer Karen Bowling’s resignation on Wednesday night, saying her employment will end on October 24th. Deegan says Bowling laid the foundation for her administration and her team made significant progress for Jacksonville. Deegan is not immediately searching for a replacement and will evaluate additional staff needs after the holidays.
  • Detainees arriving at the immigrant detention center in the Florida Everglades are given color-coded uniforms and segregated based on criminal history and flight risk. That’s according to a handbook made public as part of a lawsuit over attorney access at the site. Civil rights and environmental groups have filed three lawsuits over conditions. In one lawsuit, civil rights groups argued the facility operates outside federal law. They asked a federal judge in Fort Myers this week to stop the facility from holding detainees. A different federal judge ordered it closed in August for environmental reasons, but it remains open pending appeals.
