The Brunswick mother of 13 month-old Antonio, fatally shot in front of her eyes, says it happened while she was walking him in his stroller just yards from their home at 9 a.m.
"Two boys approached me. Two African-American boys. One of them was about 15," says Sherry West. "He said, 'I'm going to kill you if you don't give me money,' and I said, 'I swear I don't have any.'"
West and her husband, Louis Santiago, sought out our partner Action News to tell their story.
West recounts the moment it happened: “I put my arms over my baby and he shoves me and then he shot my baby right in the head," said the child's tearful mother.
“He was special. He had the bluest, bluest eyes,” says Santiago. “But why? Why my little one? You know, you should’ve just taken her pocketbook and go.”
West said she began CPR on her baby's lifeless body while wondering to herself how a couple of boys could get their hands on a real gun. "But when I saw him shoot my baby and he died, I knew it was real,” she says.
Police say the two suspects at large are two young black males. The suspected shooter, between the ages of 13 and 15, between 5'7" and 5'9" tall with a think build and curly hair. It's believed he was last seen wearing a red, long sleeved shirt.
The second male they are looking for is between the ages of 10 and 12, he is described as short in stature with a black shirt.
On Friday Brunswick Police held a press conference to update the investigation, and while they were tight-lipped about details, they did say they would not rest until someone is held accountable for the crime.
"We will not, I repeat, will NOT leave any stone unturned," a spokesman for Brunswick Police told members of the media.
The spokesman says they're currently checking lists of students who were absent from school Thursday, as the mother says the two suspects were a pre-teen and a teenager.
Police say until they have determined what the motive is, there isn't one.
"Understand this, there is no clear motive right now. I don't care what you've heard in the past or from anyone else."
A $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest, and police say they're not ruling anyone out.
