Nassau faces temporary islandwide, hourslong blackout due to power line damage

NASSAU COUNTY, Fla. — A compromised major power line near Shuckers Oyster Bar & Grill will require a temporary electrical service interruption to the entirety of Amelia Island.

Nassau Emergency Management said in a social media post that the outage affects customers served by both Florida Power & Light and Florida Public Utilities.

Emergency utility repairs cannot be completed safely without turning off electricity to the entire island, Nassau EM said.

As of 12:35 p.m., the power was out and is affecting 17,000 customers, according to a Nassau EM update.

Officials are urging people not travel to the island unless absolutely necessary.

The Nassau County Supervisor of Elections told Nassau EM that the Atlantic Rec Center will remain open under generator power to continue to serve voters until 6 p.m.

The Florida Department of Health’s Nassau County office said it would be closed for the rest of Friday and reopen on Monday.

Officials also reminded people that if they encounter a traffic light that is out, treat it as a four-way stop.

The repair process is expected to result in four to five hours without power across the island, Nassau EM said Friday morning. For its part, FPU said the outage is expected to last approximately two hours.

“Stay informed and stay safe, Nassau,” emergency officials said.
