New Jacksonville IKEA location installing more than 5,000 solar panels, largest rooftop array in Florida

Jacksonville, FL — It'll be the largest rooftop solar panel array in all of Florida.

The new Jacksonville IKEA location is hoping to lead the sunshine state in solar power, by installing over 5,000 solar panels.

A local company, A1A Solar, has been chosen for the project, which is scheduled for completion in mid-October 2017.

"We are excited about furthering our sustainability commitment and contributing to a low-carbon society with solar atop our future Jacksonville store. We have a mission to create a better everyday life for the many, and IKEA Jacksonville can add to this goal and keep us Florida's largest non-utility private solar owner," says Lars Petersson, IKEA US president, in a written statement.

The panels are expected to produce approximately 2,753,070 kWH of electricity annually, which will provide up to 50% of the building's power consumption. The system will also reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 2,133 tons yearly.

WOKV is told the rooftop will operate under a power purchase agreement with JEA.
