New laws going into effect in Florida today

It’s the first day of 2019, and some new laws of note are going into effect today and over the course of January.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor the minimum wage is going up in Florida starting Tuesday to $8.46 an hour, that's up from $8.25 an hour, and minimum wage for tipped employees is going up to $5.44, that's up from $5.23.

Starting Tuesday, hospitals will be required to post their prices online according to a new federal law. The postings would give patients more transparency on prices from hospitals for services.

Starting next week Amendment 4 will go into effect, restoring the voting rights to convicted felons who have completed all terms of their sentence except those convicted for murder or sexual offenses. We told you this past November when the amendment passed during the 2018 Mid Term Elections.

Also according to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act passed last year, Alimony will no longer be a tax deduction for payers and won't be taxable income for people getting alimony.
