JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Police shot a man they said was firing a gun at an apartment complex near River City Marketplace, leaving the man with life-threatening injuries Sunday night.
Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office investigators said at a news briefing attending by Sheriff T.K. Waters that police were called to Levi at River City apartments about 6 p.m. Sunday for reports of shots fired in the complex.
When they arrived, police said they spoke with a woman who reported hearing gunshots. Police heard another six or so gunshots while on scene.
Soon after, they spotted a 38-year-old man coming from a dark area. The man ignored orders to raise his hands and proceeded up stairs, police said at the news briefing.
The suspect pulls a gun from his right pocket, and ignores police commands to put the gun down, police said. He then turns towards the officers.
Police said as the suspect turns toward an officer while holding the gun, police said they fired and struck the man, bringing him to the ground.
The man is in critical condition in a hospital on Sunday night, police said.
The incident occurred at the apartment complex on Broxton Bay Drive off Airport Center Drive near the Jacksonville International Airport.
Police said the incident was recorded on police body-worn cameras. A police spokesman said they would be releasing images of a gun lying next to the suspect, who they said is a resident of the apartment complex.
The man is being charged with two counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, police said.
This is the 16th officer-involved shooting of 2026, police said.
There will be an independent investigation of the shooting. Check back with Action News Jax for updates.
