The St. Augustine Police Department is investigating an apparent shooting near a Flagler College dorm for the second time since the beginning of March.
Police say one person was hit above the eye by shrapnel, and no arrests have been made.
Officers responded to Carmelo's Marketplace at the corner of King Street and Malaga Street on Saturday just after 2 a.m. after someone reported a gunshot in the area, according to an offense report. A college dormitory is directly across Malaga from the convenience store parking lot, and the St. Augustine Police Department is directly across King.
Police say surveillance video from Carmelo's shows what appears to be a large brawl in the parking lot near the fuel pumps. At one point everyone ducks down suddenly and then flees from the area, according to the report.
Officers found a spent shell casing in the parking lot and a handgun in front of the Flagler College dorm, according to the report.
A witness told police she saw a black man in a red flannel shirt start a fight and moments later heard a gunshot, according to the report. An officer had received a similar description of a man involved in a disturbance at the White Lion bar across town, where the man threatened to go get a gun.
Police say a man with a cut above his eye showed up at a hospital saying he was trying to break up the fight in the Carmelo's parking lot when a gun went off and he felt the pain from getting hit by shrapnel.
The incident is an active situation, but it's not the only example of recent gun violence in the area.
Police arrested 27-year-old Elbert Ortiz-Maldonado after a gun was fired in the air over the same dorm building in early March.
Investigators are still looking for a man who fired shots into a bar about a block from the White Lion a week ago.
