Shands to build hospital on Jacksonville's Northside

Shands Jacksonville has an application approved to build a new hospital on the city's Northside at I-95 and Duval Road.

Shands President and CEO Jim Burkhart tells channel 4 this new hospital will have a different feel to it than the one near downtown, which gets city money to take care of the poor.

"There will be more blue collar, white collar employed workers that will seek care out there. It will be just other community hospitals," says Burkhart.

The new facility is slated to cost $125 million, and would hold 100 beds with an emergency room and medical building.
