Jacksonville FL — According to a recently published study from UNF, the estimated economic impact, from projects funded through a proposed gas tax increase in Duval County, would be more than $1.6 billion and create 7,640 jobs. The study looked at 72 infrastructure and transportation projects that would be funded by the possible doubling of the gas tax from six cents to 12 cents. This study was done to take a look at the “Jobs for Jax” program.
According to a list of projects from the city, the most expensive project would be the Skyway expansion and rehabilitation and in turn, would also create nearly half of the jobs potentially created according to the study. When the numbers are added up from the study, the project would create about an estimated 3,057 jobs. Overall, the transit projects outlined would be the biggest potential creator of jobs compared to the other groups of projects.
The proposed gas tax increase still needs approval from the city council, and we’re told legislation is expected to be filed this month.
