Video shows fight breaking out at Jacksonville middle school

A video that was sent to Action News Jax shows a fight that broke out among students at a Jacksonville middle school.

The Duval County Public School District said the two girls seen fighting in the video have been disciplined.

School officials said the fight broke out Wednesday at Jefferson Davis Middle School during the last period of the day while a substitute teacher was supervising the class.

The video shows the fight starting between two girls who were arguing. One girl is seen slapping and pulling the hair of the other girl. The other students in the classroom start to yell and several others get involved in the fight.

Eventually, the girls are seen on the floor, and one is heard screaming “Get off me.”

The cellphone video is only 40 seconds long. It doesn’t show an adult or a teacher stepping in.

Statement from Duval County Public Schools:

"Two students at Jefferson Davis Middle School became involved in a physical altercation Wednesday afternoon during the last period of the day. The class was being supervised by a substitute teacher who immediately contacted the main office for support. School security and staff responded quickly; they separated the students, escorted them to the dean's office and addressed the fight with both. Both students have been disciplined according to the student code of conduct. Additionally, school administration has met with the parents of both students involved.  Duval County Public Schools has strengthen its Code of Conduct to address fighting in school and the recording of fights as well. Based on student privacy rights, the specific consequence for the infraction cannot be disclosed but both students will be removed from the learning environment."

The Duval County School District said it has a zero tolerance policy for violence in classrooms, and that additional disciplinary action is pending.
