More than 50 residents from the Westside near Otis Road were at City Hall in opposition to a landfill project.
The Otis Road Landfill will be about 1,000 feet away from the nearest home but for many, that was too close. One-by-one neighbors took to the mic at the public comments portion sharing concerns over safety, traffic and property values.
Some said the road is not big enough to facilitate large trucks and that it could damage their roads. Others said their roads are too narrow and could create traffic problems. Because of the narrow roads there were about a dozen or so who said their children could be at risk waiting for the school bus, pedestrians either walking along the side of the road or on bikes could get hurt.
Despite the hours of negative reaction the City Council voted 19-0 in favor of the landfill.
There were some who were for the project, they said it could create more jobs and could stop the monopoly that currently exists in Jacksonville.
The landfill will only be used at 15 percent capacity; the rest will be saved in case of a natural disaster. The Otis Road Landfill will be used for Jacksonville's disaster recovery debris. If there's a hurricane or tropical storm that comes through and causes any sizable damage the debris would be stored up at the landfill. Right now there isn't anywhere for that debris to go.
