Six community pools closed at Julington Creek Plantation in St. Johns due to health issues

Florida Department of Health finds numerous violations

People who've used them are getting sick.

Now the state has stepped in by shutting down six community pools at Julington Creek Plantation in northwest Saint Johns County, a neighborhood that has around 5,000 homes.

An inspection done by the state health department eight days ago turned up all kinds of violations at those pools, including improper chlorine levels and issues with pH balance and algae control.

Jacalyn Morton - a resident at Julington Creek Plantation - told our news partner Action News Jax that it's been a problem for at least the past month and that management didn't warn residents about the health issues.

"I know there are people out there who say... from their doctors [that] the infection they received was from the pools," Morton added. "It's just upsetting that you wouldn't care about the health of children swimming in pools that we pay for."

Among the pools now closed include a family pool and a wading pool, according to the Florida Department of Health website. That's how Morton says she found out about the closures.

"I spoke to the guy at the health department, and he said it's definitely a health concern," Morton noted.

The Julington Creek Plantation Community Development District board is scheduled to meet Thursday night. They are expected to address these issues.
