SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — A man pleaded guilty in federal court to charges that he robbed a bank while wearing an ankle monitor.
The Department of Justice said in a news release that Michael Loyd pleaded guilty to one count of bank robbery.
In the plea agreement, Loyd admitted that he had gone to a Bank of America on July 20, 2022, at approximately 11:30 a.m. and passed a note to a teller that said, “Give your money now. Don’t say anything. I have a partner outside.” Prosecutors said Loyd admitted to writing the note on the back of his birth certificate with a highlighter before going inside the bank to commit the robbery.
While investigating the robbery, someone who knew Loyd called the police and said he believed Loyd had robbed the bank, leading police to a location where Loyd might be, The Kansas City Star reported.
When police arrived at the mobile home park where Loyd was believed to be, officers recognized the black Dodge Ram pickup truck that was reportedly used in the robbery. Officers looked at previous booking photos of Loyd and compared them to the bank’s surveillance video to determine that Loyd was their suspect.
Detectives also learned Loyd was on ankle monitoring as part of his terms for probation. When officers contacted the monitoring company, it confirmed the tracking data put Loyd’s ankle monitor inside the bank at the time of the robbery, prosecutors said.

Loyd agreed to talk to detectives and allegedly admitted to robbing the bank, telling officers that “he robbed the bank because he and his girlfriend had gotten into a fight, and he wanted to “prove a point.”
Prosecutors said Loyd stole $754 from the bank, but that he threw some money out of the window of his truck after seeing police when he was driving away from the bank. Loyd told officers he didn’t know how much of the money he threw out of the window, because he didn’t know how much money he stole initially.
Loyd faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced. The sentencing hearing has not been scheduled yet.
