Fight over Super Bowl results lands Ponte Vedra Beach woman in jail

Cheryl Merrill

A Ponte Vedra Beach woman has been arrested, after investigators say a fight with her live-in boyfriend escalated.

Deputies responded to Quail Cove in response to the fight, which happened around 7PM Sunday. 60-year-old Cheryl Merrill’s arrest report says she was fighting with the victim over who would win the Super Bowl, when she became so enraged that she pulled a wooden shelf from an entertainment center and threw it at the victim. The arrest report says the victim’s hand became severely swollen and bruised, but he refused medical treatment.

Merrill also reportedly refused commands from the responding deputy to stand by her car while the investigation was ongoing. Instead, the arrest report says she got in her vehicle, started the engine, and put it in drive, while refusing commands to get out. Deputies say she had to be physically removed from the vehicle.

Merrill is described as “severely intoxicated” in the arrest report. She has also reportedly threatened the victim in the past.

She has been arrested for aggravated battery and resisting a law enforcement officer without violence. Jail records show, as of 1:30PM Monday, she remains in the St. Johns County Jail on $6,000 bond.
