JSO: 14-year-old found inside officer's stolen truck with stolen gun

A 14-year-old boy is now facing multiple felony counts for allegedly stealing a gun and a vehicle from a Jacksonville police officer after breaking into his home earlier this week.

The charges against Patrick Joseph Bell - a Murray Hill resident - begin with armed burglary and auto theft, after he was caught inside a stolen 2010 Toyota Tacoma near a Northside apartment complex late Tuesday night.  That Tacoma and the gun - a .40 caliber Glock semi-automatic - were taken from the officer's home in Murray Hill less than 24 hours earlier, according to JSO.

He also faces one count of battery on a law enforcement officer, three counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, and a felony charge for possession of cocaine- all connecting to his attempts to escape police custody.

According to Bell's arrest report, JSO officers found the stolen Tacoma parked in the parking lot of the Roosevelt Gardens Apartments on North Lincoln Court later on in the day and set up an unmarked car while waiting for someone to get inside.  It was around 9 p.m. Tuesday when a detective inside the unmarked car spotted two people get in the Tacoma and drive out of the apartment complex towards a group of JSO officers waiting to deploy stop sticks at the entrance.

That's when the driver of the Tacoma- later identified as Bell- stopped just before the sticks and went head-on towards the unmarked JSO vehicle, swerving at the last minute to hit a marked JSO squad car nearby on the left rear side, per the report.

From there, Bell drove towards other officers standing nearby, just missing them before hitting a JEA power box and then ramming another JSO vehicle stationed on North Davis Street just outside of the apartment complex into a telephone pole.  According to JSO, that pole was hit so hard it snapped in half and fell onto another JSO patrol car nearby, forcing the officer in that car to jump out of the way so the pole wouldn't hit him.

Police say both people inside then bailed from the truck, and Bell was caught on foot a short time later with a bottle of crack cocaine in his pocket. The second suspect remains at large, possibly with another stolen gun belonging to the officer, a .38 caliber Smith & Wesson revolver.

The report notes that the Glock was found on the floorboard of the passenger side of the stolen truck. That gun was tucked inside a dresser in the officer's home when it was stolen, per JSO.

Detectives think Bell and the other person managed to take the truck after finding the keys in the home during the break-in.

The arrest report says when Bell was interviewed by police, he invoked.

Anyone with information about the wanted suspect or the dog can call JSO at 904-630-0500 or email JSOCrimeTips@jaxsheriff.org.  Those who want to stay anonymous can call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS (8477).

Detectives say the officer's dog - a tan pit bull called Hemingway - ran away from the home during the burglary, possible with some sort of injury. He was last seen running along Kingsbury Street shortly after the break-in occurred around 3 a.m. Tuesday.
