Pedestrian killed after being hit by car downtown

Jacksonville — A woman in her 50s has died after being hit by an SUV this morning near the intersection of West Union and North Laura Streets in downtown Jacksonville.

JSO said a man driving a Chevy Tahoe lost consciousness behind the wheel and hopped the curb on Union, then hit the woman as she was on the sidewalk.  The woman was taken to the hospital, where she died.

The driver eventually regained consciousness and police said he didn’t know what happened.  They suspect he suffered a medical episode, but they’re still investigating.  Charges could be filed against the driver.

Police said there were no indications that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

The victim has not been identified.
