Police arrest two for Westside crime spree

The jacksonville Sheriff's office has arrested two men in connection with a string of crimes on Jacksonville's Westside.

Police arrested 20-year-old Cyrus Benjamin and 23-year-old Eddie Postway Junior. Benjamin was arrested Monday and Postway was arrested Sunday night.

Jacksonville Police first responded to the area of the Lake Shore post office off Timuquana Rd and Wesconnett Blvd around 6:40 Sunday morning in reference to a shooting investigation.

“They found one victim that was unresponsive and that had some trauma to his body,” says JSO Sgt. TK Waters.

Waters says they determined this was actually the second victim of the spree.

It started when two black men allegedly robbed a man sitting at a bus stop in that area. We’re told it was an armed robbery, although the weapon has not been made clear.  The victim complied and was not injured. Waters says the pair then approached the second victim, who resisted and ran.

“When he fled on foot, they chased him down, and they did hit him with a vehicle,” Waters says.

That man was taken to OP Medical in serious condition, however he is stable at this time.

Police say when the pair then fled that scene, they turned on to La Moya Ave and hit and killed a 56 year old John Sikes as he was riding his bicycle in a bicycle lane.

“There’s no relation- it was a completely innocent victim,” Waters says.

Investigators say Benjamin confessed his role in the robbery to police. Benjamin is charged with armed robbery and possession of a weapon or ammunition by a convicted felon. Postway is charged with theft and carrying a concealed firearm without a permit.
