Man found dead in Las Vegas Bellagio fountain after drowning, authorities say

LAS VEGAS — A body was found in the popular Bellagio resort and casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, Friday morning.

Capt. Dori Koren of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said authorities were called around 10:00 a.m. with reports of a possible drowning in the hotel’s fountains area.

The victim was a 40 to 50-year-old white male who was homeless and local to the Las Vegas area, Koren said.

Authorities said the man, who has not been identified, was interacting with tourists before he jumped in the fountain pool and attempted to swim toward the center of the water area.

Koren said the man began to struggle while swimming and an onlooking tourist jumped in the water to help.

The tourist retreated and got out of the water when it became too difficult to swim, KSNV-TV reported.

Another person nearby who was unrelated to the incident also jumped in the water around the time of the drowning. Koren said the person was “mentally unstable” and was quickly pulled out of the water.

Investigators have not yet determined whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the incident.
