Jacksonville, Fl — A man in his 20s is recovering after he was hit in what appears to be a drive-by shooting in Jacksonville’s Riverview community.
JSO says an unknown gunman fired at least 10 shots from a vehicle just before Midnight on Lauder Avenue near the Trout River.
The victim was in bed when he was hit. He’s expected to recover.
Police say it appears to be an isolated incident with no further threat to the public. No suspect information was provided.
First Alert Weather: Warm and dry before a few weekend showers. This morning temperatures are in the 60s inland and 70s along the immediate coastline. Dry local roads this morning and afternoon. An onshore wind will continue this afternoon leading to a moderate rip current risk at local beaches. We continue to be dry through tomorrow. An isolated shower is possible, especially at the coast, on Saturday and Sunday. This weekend will be breezy too with onshore winds at 10-20 mph at times along the coast.
TROPICS: Tropical storm “Gabrielle” is poorly organized this morning as wind shear impacts the storms. It is forecast to get its act together over the next several days and stay north of the Caribbean Islands. Gabrielle is forecast to strengthen into a hurricane over the Central Atlantic and stay well east of the U.S. Another wave coming off the coast of Africa has the potential to develop but is a long, long ways out.
Three Big Things to Know:
Duval County School Superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier is addressing concerns about student safety. Six students have been hit by cars since classes started last month, and one died. Some parents have called for speed bumps outside schools. Others asked for lower speed limits, raised sidewalks and more crosswalks. School Board member Cindy Pearson says there’s a lot of focus on keeping kids safe once they’re in school, but it’s just as important they arrive safely and get home safely.
We hear growing concerns over the deal to sell the Duval County school district’s Southbank headquarters. Under the proposal, the buyer would pay $12.5 million at closing and another $7.5 million within three years for the old Prudential Drive building. DCPS could stay there through late 2026 for $1 in rent. At the same time, the district would close on the new Baymeadows headquarters at the end of 2025 for about $13.9 million, plus extra costs for furniture and equipment. The school board is expected to vote on the sale and acquisition in October.
A nurse at Memorial Hospital is fired after a series of antisemitic posts on social media. The nurse at HCA Florida Memorial Hospital reportedly praised Adolf Hitler and made other disturbing posts. “It is tragic and it’s sad,” said Rabbi Shmuli Novack, the director at Chabad Jacksonville, Town Center, and UNF. “And certainly in the medical profession, we expect a lot more.” The Florida Department of Health could not confirm or deny an investigation into the now-former nurse.
