JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — The State Attorney’s Office ruled recently that Jacksonville police were justified in shooting a man to death in the San Jose neighborhood in March 2025.
Police said Alquan Suydam, 28, was armed with a handgun and pointed it at officers during a standoff after being called to Toledo Road near Old Kings Road on March 30, 2025. Police were called to the location for a domestic incident in which Suydam punched his pregnant girlfriend in the stomach, police said.
When officers arrived at the scene, Suydam reportedly exited a car and started walking away, despite orders to stop. Police said he then pulled a pistol out and pointed it at officers. Officers then shot Suydam multiple times.
First responders provided medical aid, but he later died at the hospital.
“It is our legal opinion that the shooting of Alquan Suydam was justified under applicable Florida law,” a Sept. 8 letter from State Attorney Melissa Nelson’s office states.
The Jacksonville Community Action Committee and Suydam’s family have scheduled a remembrance/birthday celebration for him at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Cuba Hunter Park, 4380 Emerson Park, Jacksonville.
