Benedict XVI sets 'modern day precedent'

Benedict XVI has formally stepped down from the Papacy, and local congregations are sending their thanks and prayers.

“Makes you sort of melancholy at one point but also very happy because you’ve got a very strong Pope who understands what is best for the Church,” says Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine Director Father Tom Willis.

Willis says it’s a historic moment, because the Pope has not resigned in some 600 years.  Along with that does, however, come questions.

“How much are we going to see him, is he still going to be around at major ceremonies, what’s going to happen when the new Pope is installed,” says Willis.

One question he’s happy Benedict XVI settled through his farewell was that he would be completely obedient to whoever his successor will be.  Willis says that’s important to signify the strength of the church, but also to set a sort of modern day precedent.

As with a Presidential Inauguration, Willis expects there will be a peaceful transfer of power to the new Pope, although the timeline on when that person will be selected is still unclear.  Willis expects we will see guidance late next week after general congregational meetings begin Monday.

“What is the next big step after that is getting the conclave started so that the formal process of election of the Pope can begin,” he says.

As for whom that Pope will be, Willis says anything is possible, although it is not likely we will see a US Cardinal elected.
