Dramatic increase in fatal crashes in St. Johns County in 2017

Jacksonville, FL — New statistics released by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles shows a spike in fatal crashes in St. Johns County.  The numbers coincide with the population boom we’ve seen in the county.

In 2016, the county saw 30 traffic fatalities.  Just days before we close out 2017, that number stands at 44.

In January, a crash that killed a 4-year-old boy sparked a study on how to make the interstate safer at the County Road 210 interchange.  FDOT tells us they are still gathering data.

The website data shows fewer crashes this year, but more deaths.  And with more people passing through St. Johns County each and every day, that trend could continue.

Deadly crashes have gone down in Duval County, there have been 136 this year compared to last year when there were 156 traffic fatalities. In Clay County deadly crashes are down as well, 26 people died in 2016 compared to 18 this year. Baker and Nassau County traffic death’s are down too. Baker had 13 in 2016 and 6 so far this year, and Nassau had 22 last year and 17 so far this year.
