Judge orders more treatment for Orange Park man accused of 9/11 commemoration bomb plot

He’s still not competent to stand trial.

An Orange Park man accused of planning a bombing on a 9/11 commemoration in Missouri has been in a federal medical facility in North Carolina for several months, since a judge ruled in December that he wasn't competent to proceed to trial at that time. During a status hearing Wednesday, a Magistrate Judge ordered Joshua Goldberg remain in the facility for another four months to undergo "additional competency restoration treatment", the US Attorney's Office tells WOKV.

Goldberg allegedly communicated online with a man, urging him to plant a bomb at the Kansas City event. The criminal complaint says he even sent the man bomb-making instructions and told him how to hide it to avoid detection.

The criminal complaint further says Goldberg believed the man would blow himself up while making the bomb. If he did not, Goldberg told investigators he intended to alert police, making himself a hero.

If Goldberg is deemed competent to stand trial in the future, his lawyer has previously said he plans to seek an insanity defense.
