Leaky roof threatens to damage expensive elections equipment

Millions of dollars in expensive elections equipment paid for with taxpayer money is in danger of water damage at the Supervisor of Elections Office on the Northside.

Elections supervisor Jerry Holland tells our partner Action News he's been trying to get the leaks dealt with for years and that the landlord at Gateway has had them patched up, but they keep coming back. Holland says he's asked to see the problem on the roof for himself, but the landlord hasn't let him.

"We've been prohibited from going up on the roof," he says.

Holland says taxpayers deserve a return on their investment, especially when they're paying top dollar for the location.

The city pays over $50,000 a month in rent on the Gateway Mall office, which they are leasing on a month-to-month basis.

Holland wants to know what they're doing to fix the problem permanently. The city has been considering moving the SOE somewhere else, and Holland says if the landlord doesn't come up with a permanent fix he'll be recommending a move.
