Police: Clay mother of two shot in head over face slapping

A Middleburg mother of two was shot and killed after she slapped a man in the face at a party early Saturday morning.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was called to 26 year-old Jamie Martin’s home in Middleburg around 12:30 a.m.

The arrest says Elliot Orsborn, a 26 year-old convicted felon, said something to Martin, who then “jokingly slapped” him across the face.

Orsborn immediately pulled out a silver .22 revolver, pointed it at Martin, and shot her in the forehead.

According to Martin’s boyfriend, Orsborn immediately said he did not mean to shoot her.  He then stayed at the scene for a minute or two and then fled after trying to help her.  He was later arrested at his home in Orange Park and charged with manslaughter.

Deputies arrived to find Martin in her home garage with a gunshot wound to her forehead.  She was transported to Orange Park Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

One witness says Orsborn kept flashing his gun and playing around with it throughout the night.  The relationship between Martin and Orsborn is unknown.

Orsborn is a convicted felon.  He was convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon back in January 2011.  An arrest report from that incident says Orsborn threatened someone twice with a knife after that person told him to stop throwing trash into a hotel parking lot.

He has also been charged three times for possession of marijuana.  In 2010, he was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill.

Osborn’s first court appearance in Sunday morning.
