Suicide note listing victims found in Union County shooting spree

Union County investigators now say the shooting spree which rocked a small community this weekend was in fact premeditated, although the exact motive has still not been determined.

“This got us all by surprise. Nobody would ever suspect him of carrying out this type of a threat or this type of action at all,” says Union County Sheriff’s Office major Gary Seay.

Seay says investigators found a “suicide note” at the home of 72-year-old Hubert Allen Jr. Saturday afternoon which listed five intended victims of a shooting spree he began Saturday morning.  Allen is accused of first shooting and killing his former co-worker 28-year-old Rolando Gonzalez-Delgado and former employer 80-year-old Marvin Pritchett at Pritchett Trucking around 9 AM.

A short time later, investigators say Allen shot 66-year-old Lewis Mabrey Jr. after some type of altercation. Maybrey is being treated at the hospital, but Union County Sheriff Jerry Whitehead says he is expected to be released this week.

Allen’s final victim is still fighting for his life.  44-year-old David Griffis was shot in the stomach at an alternate Pritchard Trucking location in Lake Butler. Whitehead says he is considered “extremely critical”.

Allen returned to his home following the shootings and turned the gun on himself.

The suicide note found in Allen's home also contains a 5th name, and Seay says investigators have spoken to that person, who is safe.  Three guns, including a shotgun, were found in Allen's home along with the suicide note, although Whitehead says the investigation in to the exact motive for the shooting continues.

“We’re working around the clock to get to that,” he says.

While that part of the investigation moves forward, Seay says they’re also working to instill a sense of security back on the small community.

“We don’t understand it- why he’s done this,” Seay says.

He says the Sheriff’s Office is increasing patrols at some locations, like the trucking headquarters, until the investigation has wrapped up. Seay further says, however, that they do not believe there is any immediate danger to anyone in the community.
