15-year-old Sandalwood student dies following crash

A 15-year-old girl who was hit by a car on her walk to school Monday morning has died.

The crash happened around 7am on Alden Road near Sandalwood High School.

Elizabeth Ross lived on Alden Road, and JSO says she was not crossing at an intersection or a crosswalk when she was struck by the car. JSO says speed does not appear to a factor.

A statement from the Duval County Public Schools reads:

"The entire community of Sandalwood High School and Duval County Public Schools is deeply saddened by the unexpected passing of one of its students. To support the well-being of students and faculty, specially-trained school psychologists and social workers will be onsite today at Sandalwood High School, and will provide continued support as needed".

The driver told our partner CBS 47/Fox 30 Action News Jax that a girl was running across the street when she was hit.  The driver says she never saw the girl.

JSO says the driver did not exhibit any indicators of being impaired, and that the investigation is continuing.
