Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry addresses death of 3-year-old Amari Harley in Arlington, park safety

Jacksonville, FL — Following the death of 3-year-old Amari Harley at Bruce Park in Arlington over the weekend, Jacksonville Mayor Lenny Curry is addressing park safety.

He says what the family of Harley is going through is unimaginable.

"As a father with young kids, it is heartbreaking to see a day of fun and family enjoyment become a nightmare in our city," says Curry.

When asked if the city could face any sort of charges or lawsuit in reference to the boy's death, Curry says now is not the time to speculate, especially as it's still an active Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigation.

"We have neglected infrastructure all over this city, but this isn't a time for this office to point fingers at neglected infrastructure from the past. This is a time to mourn with the family, let the facts bear themselves out, follow the facts where they lead, and then do our jobs," says Curry.

Curry says his first priority is public safety and if mistakes were made by the city, there will be accountability.

Curry says the city’s Parks and Public Works staff have been working to go to parks and public spaces to assess the safety and security measures in place.

According to city officials, the underground water tank where Harley's body was discovered had passed its latest inspection. However, they have since been replaced.
