HOW TO HELP: Hundreds of German Shepherds rescued from Georgia breeding operation

Close to 500 dogs have been rescued from two properties in Georgia, in connection to a breeding operation run by a woman who's now been arrested. Animal rescue organizations are coming together to carry out the massive operation, but they're asking for your support.

According to various rescue groups, there are two properties involved- one in Candler County and one in Montgomery County. National, state, and local organizations are involved in rescuing the dogs from what they’re calling “deplorable” conditions, getting them medical attention, and assessing them behaviorally.

All organizations involved are requesting donations, as the dogs need varying levels of medical care.

In Candler County- where there were 163 dogs rescued- the Atlanta Humane Society has taken on a brunt of the rescue operations. The Nassau County Humane Society is one of the local organizations that are assisting there.

In Montgomery County, Animal Aid USA and Guardians of Rescue are coordinating the efforts. They’re tending to hundreds of dogs, conducting on-site behavioral assessments, medical exams and vaccines, and more.

Guardians of Rescue is taking on the cost of the rescue at this site, so they're asking for donations.

The dogs are not yet available for fostering or adoption in most cases, because they need extensive care and assessment first. Additionally, most have not previously been on a leash or in a home, so there is a high risk they can run off if not handled appropriately.

If you are able to open your home, you can foster or adopt other animals these shelters and organizations are caring for, to take some pressure off of their daily operations.

The Nassau County Humane Society is asking for donations, but they are also always seeking volunteers to help with all of the animals in their care. They have taken in several dogs from Candler County already, and expect to get some from the Montgomery County operation in the future.

Angela Powell has been arrested for animal cruelty in connection to this case. The Candler County Sheriff’s Office says they anticipate more charges to be coming against Powell, and their investigation continues to see if anyone else was involved.
