Jacksonville Mayor welcomes review of JEA privatization

Jacksonville, FL — JEA is going to begin a review of privatization.

The push is being led by JEA board member Tom Petway, who issued a challenge to explore privatization during a meeting Tuesday, according to the Florida Times-Union.

Mayor Lenny Curry says it's a simple request that citizens and city leaders explore the value of their public assets, and how utility customers can be best served.

Curry says he welcomes the challenge and will work with City Council leadership to answer these questions.

“Tom Petway is a respected business and civic leader. He’s spent decades working to make our city better. At JEA he’s made the board stronger and helped the organization grow. I appreciate his service. With his challenge to explore privatization, he has made a simple request that citizens and city leaders explore the value of their public assets and how utility customers in our city can be best served. As a reform-minded mayor, I welcome this challenge and will work with City Council leadership to answer these questions.” – Mayor Lenny Curry
