Man with knife leads to lockdown at Lone Star Elementary

WOKV has confirmed Lone Star Elementary School in Arlington was locked down today because of an armed person in the parking lot.

JSO was dispatched to the area at 2:49PM. We’re told 24-year-old Jeffery Shurley was in some kind of dispute with other people in the parking lot of the school.  JSO received a detailed description of the suspect, who they located two blocks away.

We’re told Shurley has a knife that is “single blade, flip out style with a circular loop attached on the end” in his right pocket.

Shurley has now been booked into jail for trespass on school property with a firearm or other weapon, a felony charge.  The nature of the argument in the school parking lot has not yet been released.

DCPS says Lone Star Elementary was placed on lockdown around dismissal time as a result of the police activity. Once JSO contained the situation, however, we’re told dismissal was able to take place normally.

A search of JSO records shows Shurley was charged on December 16, 2013 with domestic assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill. That charge was later dropped. In January 2014 he was convicted of two misdemeanor charges- petit theft and possessing less than 20 grams of marijuana.  Shurley will make his first appearance on this trespass charge at the pre-trial detention facility tomorrow morning.
