Nassau County deputies, DCF investigating drowning death of 14-month-old in bathtub

Jacksonville, FL — A tragic day in Fernandina Beach.

The Nassau County Sheriff's Office is investigating after two young children were reportedly left unattended in a bathtub Tuesday afternoon, resulting in the death of a 14-month-old baby.

Sheriff Bill Leeper tells WOKV, their mother says she left the two children, a 14-month-old and a 3-year-old, in the bathtub for just a minute, but when she came back into the room, she found the 14-month-old underwater.

We're told she called 911 and performed CPR until deputies arrived, but it wasn't enough.

No charges have been filed at this time, but the investigation remains active.

We've also confirmed with the Department of Children and Families that their agency has opened a child death investigation, releasing the following statement from DCF Secretary Mike Carroll:

"The death of this child is deeply saddening and we are grieving with all who loved her. DCF has opened a child death investigation into this tragedy and we are working closely with the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office and the family during this process.?

DCF says the family has no prior history of child welfare issues.
