Man Cave Barber Shop hosts ‘Shots at the Shop’ vaccination event Tuesday

Jacksonville — Jacksonville’s Man Cave Barbershop will host Tuesday’s “Shots at the Shop,” a Covid-19 vaccination program initiated by the White House.

Dana Miller, the owner of the Eastside barber shop, will represent Jacksonville in the nationwide program that includes one-thousand barber shops and hair salons to help vaccinate the unvaccinated.

Miller completed his application seven months ago, never thinking he’d ever be chosen.

“Last Tuesday, I got a phone call with a Washington D.C. area code,” he said. “It was Dr. Cameron Webb, the senior advisor for the Biden Administration’s COVID vaccination program saying that my barber shop was selected because I had a great reputation for helping the community.”

Miller said he couldn’t believe it.

“I thought it was a joke,” he continued. “Who would ever expect the White House to call you? Especially the guy sitting right beside the president!”

Without hesitation, Miller accepted the invitation and a party was born.

In addition to free Pfizer vaccinations for anyone 12 and older, Shelf Love will serve soul food alongside a live DJ playing tunes. The Jacksonville Jaguars will also be on deck with The Roar and Jaxson de Ville.

Miller noted that vaccines are for those who have never been vaccinated. There will be a second event in 21 days for patients to receive their second shots.

“I encourage everybody to come at 11 a.m. so they can register and enjoy the festivities and the good foods,” he said.

“Shots at the Shops” worked in tandem with the University of Maryland’s Maryland Center for Health Equity, the Black Coalition Against COVID, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) and the beauty and personal care brand SheaMoisture.

Lead by Stephen B. Thomas, PhD, director of the Maryland Center for Health Equity, and building on the Health Advocates In-Reach and Research (HAIR) campaign, the “Shots at the Shop” program trained Black hairstylists and barbers to dispel myths and misinformation about COVID-19.

Florida Blue will run the two-hour event. The FAMU College of Pharmacy and Black Nurses Association will administer the vaccinations provided by the Florida Department of Health. Insurance agents will be also be on hand to answer Obamacare questions.
