A Republican state senator from Bradenton wants to help save the lives of stray dogs and cats.

Sen. Michael Bennett is proposing a law that would send strays to not-for-profit, no-kill shelters instead of the public shelters where they're currently sent for euthanization.

Bennett says not only will the measure help save animal lives, but it will also lift some burden from the taxpayers by shifting the cost of keeping the animals to the non-profit sector.

The no-kill shelters' only concern is that they'll have a hard time handling the increase in animals who all need good homes.
