Jacksonville, FL — A semi truck driver is hospitalized with critical injuries after being shot multiple times by police on I-10 near US 301 in Baldwin.  The suspect had fired at police, hitting the vehicles, before three officers returned fire.

Officers were originally called around 7 am to the Pilot Travel Center on US 301 for a shooting involving two men.  One man was found dead in the parking lot, and a second man was transported to a hospital to be treated for injuries.

A witness described a suspect vehicle to police, leading officers to I-10.

"Once they found that vehicle they noticed it stopped on I-10 eastbound. Officers stopped their car, began approaching that vehicle. As they were approaching that vehicle, shots rang out from that individual in front of that vehicle", said
JSO Chief of Investigations TK Waters.

Officers returned fire, wounding the man, and he was airlifted to a hospital for treatment.

The officers were identified as Sgt. Jay Dowling, Officer S.C. Hackney and K9 Officer R.C. Winfrey. All three fired their service weapons, and this was their first shooting. No officers were injured.

Traffic on I-10 and U.S. 301 in Baldwin was at a standstill as police blocked eastbound lanes through at least Noon.
