The National Park Service is working to preserve the cannons at the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine.
The fort closed for a portion of Thursday, to allow 14 iron cannons to be removed by crane. The cannons will be transported to the Conservation Research Laboratory at Texas A&M, where they will be treated to protect them from ongoing corrosion resulting from exposure to the elements. Over the next five years, 25 cannons will be transported and treated.
This project is funded from park entrance fees, according to NPS.
During the fort closure, NPS says special interpretive services will be available for free, including Park Rangers leading talks, tours of the grounds, and demonstrations.
