Child killed in apparent accidental shooting in Jacksonville (Alicia Tarancon, Action News Jax)

Jacksonville, FL — A Jacksonville family has lost a child in what appears to be an accidental shooting. It happened around 9:15 pm Monday East 43rd Street off North Main on the northside.

Police say a 'very young juvenile' had apparent gunshot injuries and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.  They didn't provide the child's age, or even say it was a boy or girl.

A family friend tells Action News Jax Alicia Tarancon that a 2-year-old boy got a hold of a gun and shot himself.

Another young child was in the home at the time and officers say they're leaning toward an accidental shooting, but it's early in their investigation.

An incident report provided by JSO states that the weapon involved was a handgun, and the cause of death was undetermined. When officers first arrived on scene they saw an officer performing CPR until JFRD arrived. Homicide detectives arrived on scene to begin an investigation.

There were adults at the home when the shooting happened, and everyone was cooperating with police.
