Clark Howard: Do your research before donating

Jacksonvielle, FL — Rising from the ashes, French leader Emmanuel Macron says his country will rebuild after the Notre Dame Cathedral caught fire and was destroyed earlier this week.

The full cost of construction is not yet known, but French billionaires and companies have already pledged millions of dollars towards the effort and parts of the Jacksonville community area is coming together help out.

However, Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says before you donate a dollar or dig deep into your pockets, think twice about who you are giving to.

"There are fraudsters that are popping up and stealing your money. So, you have got to be careful before you without thinking just throw money in."

Clark says whether it’s a charity in your community or an online fundraiser – it’s incredibly important to know who you are giving money to.

Clark recommends using websites such as Give, CharityWatch, and CharityNavigator to help you with figuring out where and how to donate.

When it comes to online campaigns such as GoFundMe, Clark recommends reading up on the organization or knowing the person behind the fundraiser.

A big “no-no” from Clark is to never give out your Social Security number or credit card, bank account, or personal information to telemarketers. He says if you’re interested in making a donation – initiate the call yourself.
