Consumer Warrior Clark Howard chimes in on gym memberships during coronavirus pandemic

One-of-a-kind indoor sports facility planned for St. Johns County

A brand-new, state-of-the-art indoor complex is coming to St. Johns County.

It's called Project Family and it will have everything from indoor track and volleyball courts to treadmills for parents wanting to keep an eye on their kids.

The 175,000-square-foot facility will be located on Race Track Road between Interstate 95 and State Road 9B.

The facility will also include a cafe.

Project Family tells Action News Jax that the facility will bring more than 100 full- and part-time jobs to the area.

Project Family said it is hoping to get all of its permits approved by the end of the year so construction can start by 2020.

A lot of people are wondering what to do about gym memberships right now since most are closed during the coronavirus pandemic.

Consumer Warrior Clark Howard says he’s not a big fan of signing up for gyms that don’t let you back out whenever you want in the first place, but there is hope if you’re in that situation right now.

“You have a right, even if you’re under a contract with the gym, to dispute that charge with your credit card company,” Howard says.

He says there’s a protection available for occasions when a business fails to deliver goods and services.

“Obviously, they’re not delivering the service that you’re paying for right now,” Howard says.

He says you’ll have to take it up with the gym when the pandemic comes to an end if you want to keep working out there, but there’s no point in spending valuable money on a membership you can’t use.

“You’re not going to have a good relationship with the gym if you do the dispute with your credit card, but it is the right thing to do if you want to protect your money,” Howard says.
