Jacksonville, Fl — One person was killed when a car was hit by an Amtrak passenger train on Jacksonville’s westside.
It happened just off Roosevelt near NAS Jax around 10 pm Thursday. According to Jacksonville police, a freight train was stopped on the southbound track, and an Amtrak train was heading north. The driver of a car ignored the railroad crossing and stop arms, and was hit by the passenger train.
The driver, who was not identified, died on scene. Amtrak says more than 100 passengers were on board, and no one was hurt.
Statement From Amtrak:
This incident is a critical reminder to the public about the importance of exercising caution around railroad tracks and crossings. Amtrak continues to work closely with Operation Lifesaver (OLI) to communicate the dangers of being inattentive at rail grade crossings and along the railroad right-of-way. Each year, approximately 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossings and trespassing incidents nationwide.
