Driver who killed woman sentenced to one year in jail

It's one year in jail for the man who hit and killed 23-year-old Monica Moon along a Westside road.

At his sentencing, an emotional Michael Beauregard begged Moon's loved ones for forgiveness.

"To the family of Monica Moon, I want to say that I am truly sorry that I was involved in the accident that caused Monica to lose her life. . .I've never intentionally harmed another person in my life."

Part of his sentence was for leaving the scene of the crash on Lambing Road.

"I know that leaving the scene was not the right thing to do -- and for that, I'm so sorry," he tearfully told Monica's loved ones.

But he said at that moment, he felt he had to.

"At the scene, I was threatened with violence.  I became scared and drove away out of complete fear and confusion."

That explanation wasn't enough for Monica's fiance, David Lopez.

"A year in jail and five years probation for killing somebody?  That's not right," he told Channel Four.

Monica's mother, Maria Desuyo, was a little more forgiving.

"I'm a Christian and I do forgive Michael for what he has done, because God did forgive us for everything."

Beauregard must also perform 200 hours of community service once he's released from jail.
