BUNNELL, Fla. — After a two-day trial, a Flagler County jury found defendant Leigha Mumby guilty as charged of vehicular homicide and reckless driving in a crash that killed her boyfriend in 2025.
Mumby, 25, was arguing with her boyfriend, Daniel Waterman, while driving recklessly on Interstate 95 at speeds of over 100 mph, an investigation determined.
The defendant was driving 94 mph when she suddenly turned the steering wheel to the left, causing the vehicle to veer off the highway and crash into several trees.
Waterman suffered a broken neck and was paralyzed from the neck down in the crash that occurred in February. He later died of pneumonia on Oct. 8, 2025.
“This demonstrates our commitment to taking on complicated cases involving technical subject matter,” said State Attorney R.J. Larizza. “Accountability breeds justice - and this case exemplifies our mission to make justice a reality for our victims, our families and our communities.”
The Florida Highway Patrol investigated the case. Assistant State Attorney Melissa Clark successfully tried the case. Mumby faces 20 years in prison for the convictions at a sentencing hearing.
