Hole opens in previously repaired portion of I-95 Downtown

A hole has opened on I-95 once again.

The Florida Department of Transportation confirms to WOKV that a roughly 12 inch-by-15 inch hole has opened in the center lane on I-95 Northbound before the bridges exit. This is an area that was repaired about a year and a half ago, according to FDOT Spokesman Ron Tittle.

“It’s not really a completely unsafe situation, you know where a vehicle would be damaged badly, but we just need the traffic to slow down and be aware,” says Tittle.

Around 9PM crews closed two lanes to do repairs- although what exactly that includes won’t be clear until they can better assess the scene.

Because of the weather, the highway was left open for more than two hours after the hole was first spotted.  Tittle says, based on the size and scope of the hole, they were not concerned about allowing traffic to continue for a brief period of time, but it was something that needed to be addressed soon.

“More traffic hits is and it starts to break loose even more, and it causes some of that concrete to crumble,” he says.

As for whether he’s surprised to see an area that’s already been repaired open up once again, he says that’s the reason for the larger Overland Bridge upgrade which they’re in the process of doing.

WOKV will keep a close eye on this issue and any problems that linger for your morning commute.
