Jacksonville man arrested for fatal shooting of live-in girlfriend

Jeremy Murkey

Jacksonville, FL — A Jacksonville man has been arrested for the fatal shooting of his live-in girlfriend, with the victim’s two young children in the home.

WOKV first told you Monday about the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Shonda Smith. Police say she was brought to the Park West ER around the same time a shooting was reported on Diamond Leaf Drive early Monday morning. She died as a result of her injuries, and police said they took a person of interest in to custody.

Now, JSO says Smith’s live-in boyfriend, 37-year-old Jeremy Murkey is the one who took her to the ER. Police say Murkey initially tried to walk away at the ER, but later admitted to being responsible for the shooting. JSO is investigating this case as a domestic matter, although they’re not yet clear about the nature of the specific argument that led to the shooting.

We’re told Smith’s two young children were home at the time of the shooting, and that one of them actually called 911.

Murkey is being charged with murder.
