Jacksonville man pleads guilty to trying to kill his mother, SWAT officers after argument

A Jacksonville men pleaded guilty to attempting to kill his mother and law enforcement officers after an argument in 2014.

Gary Robert Schiwart, 48, accepted seven counts of attempted murder in the second degree of a law enforcement officer, two counts of attempted murder in the second degree and one count of aggravated assault.

Schiwart shot at his mother while she ran away after the two got in an argument in Jan. 2014. He then barricaded himself inside his home for hours, firing several shots at SWAT officers, before surrendering.

According to the State Attorney’s Office, Schiwart faces a minimum of 20 years and up to life in prison and will be sentenced the week of May 16.
