St. Johns traffic gridlocked by multiple separate I-95 crashes

Drivers in St. Johns County have been stuck in bumper to bumper traffic on I-95 Thursday following multiple crashes through the day.

It all started around 8am with a rollover crash involving a semi-truck that spilled nails, screws, and other construction material on the road just north of International Golf Parkway.

The St. Johns County Sheriff's Office says the equipment spilled across several lanes of travel, causing backups to extend more than five miles as the site was cleared.

Just after 10am there was another crash involving a semi-truck just south of International Golf Parkway exit in the northbound lanes of I-95.

This time, the Florida Highway Patrol says a semi hit an SUV that was slowing down, during stop and go traffic. Both the semi and the SUV went off the road; the semi then went on to hit a tree.

According to the crash report in this incident, the driver of the SUV, 67-year-old William Grant Jr., was killed. His passenger has serious injuries. The semi driver wasn’t hurt, but FHP says charges are pending.

But it didn’t end there, around 1pm, another crash, involving a semi-truck, two cars and a pickup truck, happened south of International Golf Parkway.

Troopers say traffic had come to a stop, but the driver of the pickup didn’t stop in time, hitting another car, leading to a chain reaction crash.

The injuries were mostly minor, but FHP says there was at least one driver with serious injuries. The driver of the pickup has been cited with failure to use due care.
