Jacksonville FL — During a press conference Thursday, Jacksonville police thanked the public for their help in finding two men who are accused of trying to return to the scene of a fight in Five-Points earlier this month with rifles. JSO says back on February 5th, at around 11PM, they were originally called to Park Street to break up a fight that involved 20 people, but when they got there everyone was gone. About 20 minutes later, officers were on a traffic stop and they were flagged down by someone letting them know that the two suspects were walking with rifles.

“In a moments notice, these officers go from the traffic stop to looking for two individuals in the area carrying rifles.” JSO Director of Investigations Mike Bruno says.

Eventually officers found the two suspects, 27-year-old Damon Williams and 18-year-old Charles Janes, on Post Street. JSO says when they found the suspects they were not holding the rifles and they were acting as if they had no idea why the officers were talking to them. Police say about 20 feet away from where they stopped the suspects they found a shotgun and a rifle loaded with a drum magazine. Witnesses were able to ID the suspects.

According to their arrest reports, both are charged with open carrying of weapons, which is a misdemeanor, and Janes is facing other charges.

“This could have been national news. However, because of the citizens being observant and providing that information to our officers, and our officers quickly intervening, it changes the story dramatically.” Director Bruno says.

At this time police have not said what the suspects exact intentions were in trying to return to the scene.

“But at the end of the day, they’re just not happy about the outcome of that fight and they want to escalate it.” Director Bruno says.

According to JSO jail records both have bonded out of jail.
