JSO issues crime alert, after increase in auto burglaries outside gyms, fitness centers

JSO crime alert (Jacksonville Sheriff's Office)

Jacksonville, FL — The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is issuing a new, city-wide crime alert.

JSO says they've seen a recent increase in auto burglaries in the parking lots of gyms and fitness centers throughout the city.

They tell us suspects are parking beside vehicles and then looking inside to see if there's anything of value. If they see something, they'll break the window and grab the items and then take off.  Police say in many of the cases, the suspects are using the stolen credit cards from the purse/wallet immediately after, at nearby gas stations and stores.

JSO has released the following list of tips to prevent this from happening to you:

• Do not leave a purse in an unattended vehicle.

• Do not leave anything of value in an unattended vehicle.

• Most vehicles can be broken into easier than lockers.

• If you leave your ignition key in the car, the door key you have is not preventing your car from being stolen.

If you have any information about this recent increase in auto burglaries, you're urged to contact JSO at (904) 630-0500 or by email at JSOCrimeTips@JaxSheriff.org.
